Integral Shafts
An example of large ID fan shafts forged from AISI 4140 steel.
Typically used on large fans, these shafts are designed with a large flange plate with a double row of bolt holes. The fan wheel is attached to the shaft with high strength bolts. This design will ensure that the wheel can not come loose on the shaft as could happen with a traditional hub sleeve design when subject to high rates of temperature fluctuations.
Another important advantage is that the shaft is easily removed from the fan wheel in the case where repair or maintenance would require the separation of the two. Today, many fan manufacturers use a welded connection between the hub and wheel which makes the separation of the shaft and hub from the wheel extremely difficult or impossible without causing damage.
